It is charming to head up north at least once or twice - or to another state which fully embraces the season. When we do this - I take as many pictures as I can so I can look at them and imagine we have fall. These pictures will help me remember fall this year......I took them while on a retreat in Pinetop, Arizona......

fall is for cool and for color.....
I love the changes in color, temperature, and sunlight that come with fall. We only see hints of autumn in Phoenix. It is a strange mix of cactus, palm trees, and pumpkins. I know some people in cooler parts of the country will laugh - but we do still enjoy the fall season here. The light changes as the "cooler" weather comes. Even though we've always been able to be outside - now we can go out without having to shower immediately after! We decorate with pumpkins and leaves and get out the cinnamon candles. It is a breath of fresh air - and leaves an impression of a new beginning.

fall means football.....
Fall means football....well - ok it also means post season baseball for the Diamondbacks (Yay!), pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks, trees in color up north, cool 100 degree temperatures......among other things. Fun stuff. Last week as the mornings began to cool off the kids began to enjoy early morning flag football games in the backyard. Most of the time it is just Ryan, Allison and Jonathan who play. Somehow they figure it out and there haven't been too many serious injuries or spats. It is so wonderful to hear the kids outside and have quiet inside. The cool weather and fun is coming.....

Dawn of a new day: That was then, this is now...
A lot has happened in twenty years. After great success from age 8 through high school, my college track career never amounted to anything glorious....though I wouldn't change a thing. My last four competitive years were plagued with injuries - but through those struggles I met Jesus and began a whole different identity: with Christ. Lots of ice and rehab in the training room was beneficial - Merl was good at ice massage! After college I didn't want much to do with exercise! Why would I want to run, bike, or swim for fun if there was no competition? I struggled to figure out why I didn't "love" physical activity like I thought I should. I am fortunate to have a high metabolism so haven't always "needed" to work out.
In the last ten years however, since having kids, I've wanted to "go back" to being in good condition. My last knee surgery was 4 and a half years ago and since then I've really not been able to the things I love. Of course my surgeon said running was not the sport I should choose - but I don't know many other homeschool moms spending hours at the gym or going to workout classes, etc. It is quick and easy. Um - well maybe not easy.
Merl and Ryan running 5k's recently put me over the edge. I couldn't take it. At the start of the first race I practically jumped in without entering and with my heavy camera around my neck! That was it. I felt like a slouch.
So six weeks ago I bought way too expensive running shoes - leashed up the counter surfing dog who needs exercise more than me-and out the door we went. The first day was brutal. I ran 2 minutes and walked 1: for 20 minutes. My chest burned, legs hurt, and I was not happy. Let me add I was not feeling good when I woke up either. I was not feeling good when I got home, or when I was in the shower. But about an hour and a half later after I was drinking my coffee I began to feel a twinge of pleasure. This process repeated itself 3 times a week for about a month.
After six weeks - when I wake up in the morning I am still not chipper. But I feel somewhat ok when I go out the door and can appreciate the fresh (almost cool) air. Some days I run with one of the kids - others just the dog. I am still sucking a lot of air - feel more aches and pains than I'd like - but I can almost run the whole 20 minutes......on a good day. I love the feeling of full sweat - accomplishment - and improvement. I almost don't need my cup of coffee. (But I will always drink it!) The jury is still out on whether the knee will agree with this routine.....
I might enter a 5K. I've only run one before - back 18 years ago when I was "in shape." I would almost rather not run unless I can place in the top 25. Laugh if you want. Some of you just like exercise. Some of us just love competing. But for now I am content with this new habit. It doesn't define me but maybe it will change some aspect of me. If not my mind at least my behind!

school days......6 weeks and counting....
The weather is still blistering hot here.....so why not be inside accomplishing something? I have decided that when we start school early - I so love myself in the spring when we want to be outside! This time of year is when the high temperatures honestly get to us! The kids have worked hard even though we are a little stir crazy due to being inside because of the heat. Therefore - we have almost 6 weeks of work under our belt which is encouraging. Our school days are lasting longer now since we have one in pre-K, 1st, 5th, and 7th grade!
Here are some photos from the last weeks. Let me just say - these are the finer moments! Ha! I am not reaching for the camera during the skirmishes or "down days!" I guess I am saying it is not all pie in the sky - we have still had tears and frustration - but I am encouraged that so far this year those times have been in the minority. The Lord is good and faithful as He works in all of us......
Jonathan begged for a math book this year - so "ask and you shall receive!"
So proud!

Allie reviewing her letters the first day....
Madison likes her new "work space" by the back window......
Ryan works hard at my desk for much of the time....
Jonathan wanted to "help" with cutting - Ryan was gracious to give him pieces to "cut."
Interesting reading spot!

Seaport Village to home.....
Sunday morning we headed to Seaport Village, which I am afraid to say.....is more my type of gig! Clean bathrooms, food, interesting shops.....yes....its' true. The kids are developing some favorite aspects of being there too. Ryan wanted to board the USS Midway again....and we have the annual pictures with the birds on the shoulder! The kids also love a little shell shop where they can buy shells, jewelry, shark jaws....you know, treasures. Uncle Gary and Aunt Nancy bought a kite for their great grandson, Brodie and we all enjoyed its flight.

After several hours of window shopping, not so great fast food, special shell shop purchases, and people watching it was time to board the Miller van and head out of town. I think we were all asleep (accept Merl to drive us) before we were on the freeway! The kids did a great job traveling and we were back home before long - ready for school in the morning. We are thankful for the change of scenery, time with family, and making more of our own memories.....

Madison, Brodie, Jonathan, Allie, and Ryan
The bird guy all of a sudden put the birds on Aunt Nancy - I was ready!

Ryan the budding photographer took this one....
Buddies.....

Madison was not trusting this character....
Such a huge boat.....

Out of the desert and into the waves......
After just 3 weeks of school we could call it....."Break from the heat" maybe? "Heat break" instead of "Fall break?" Whatever you want to dub it.....I love being less than a days drive from the cool mountains or the beach! Merl needed to be in San Diego for a short Saturday meeting last weekend - so we tagged along. My generous aunt and uncle allow us to "bunk in" at their home when we come which is what makes these frequent excursions a possibility. This time we drove into San Diego later Friday night so Merl could work a full day.
Saturday morning after dropping Merl off the kids and I enjoyed the cool weather at a park, did some grocery shopping, and visiting with my uncle. After lunch we packed up and then picked up daddy who had traded his dress clothes for the beach attire and we jumped on the freeway headed for "Beaches".....
I'll be real here.....the beach is not my favorite place....the sand, mess, etc. Sorry! But it does make for good pictures and of course the kids love it. It was a too cool 70 degrees for me on the beach! I was freezing and begged for the shirt off Merl's back! The kids enjoyed it for a few hours but then were happy to be done.....so we left the crowd for a relaxing evening at my aunt and uncle's. Just enough beach for me and leaving the kids wanting more......ha!

We haven't been to the park in awhile....

Nice pose....

the 5K fiasco.....
After saying goodbye at 5:30.... I decided I could not go back to sleep so made my coffee and settled with my book, bible, and pen on the couch. It hadn't been too long and Allie appeared. "Go back to bed, silly - it's 6am!" I said to her....not believing she was up. 15 minutes had not gone by and the phone rang. Cell phone number I didn't recognize......I answered and there is Merl on the other end. "Hey! Race is about to start but wanted to let you know I locked the keys in the car!" Heaven help me - this is usually my line.....So I hung up the phone and did some quick thinking. Could leave the kids and go..... but not wise with Allie the only one awake (or so I thought). Upon investigation I found Madison awake too. "Quick - get dressed lets see if we can get to South Mountain before the end of the race so I can get the guys' picture!" So we dragged poor Jonathan out of bed, threw his clothes on and were off.
As we entered the park I could tell by the pace of the runners that we might not have missed Ryan and Merl's finish. We ran up the road after parking the van and about the time we got to the runners I saw 2 of the little boys in Ryan's age bracket. This was a conflict. I prayed Ryan had already passed (knowing they had both run faster than him last time) - but on the other hand was bummed I might have missed a photo opp. But before long I could see his strong gait running along. My heart was happy to see him but a little disappointed knowing that he was behind his competitors. He was glad to see us and be near the finish. I had no way of knowing how far behind the boys he was since they start the runners in a stagger.
Two minutes later came daddy - he looked quite a bit more uncomfortable than his agile son - but was still looking good! I snapped his picture and enjoyed the view for a few minutes and then off we went to meet up with them.
I was feeling joyful and couldn't believe I still got pictures.....then it hit me. In our rush to leave and my urgency to not miss the end of the race - I had just grabbed the van keys and not Merl's car keys. We still had no keys to get into the car! Oh brother - my brain. The kids enjoyed the end of race snacks that Ryan shared with them.
Ryan cut 1 minute off his time (on a much more difficult course) - and missed 3rd place by only 30 seconds! And we enjoyed an unexpected/unplanned family outing. We still made it to church on time.....though had to go BACK to South Mountain after to claim the car! Time for a nap.....
