Spence celebration (Day 1)

I am way behind in my writing but better late than never I guess! In June, 40 of us gathered in Albuquerque, New Mexico to honor my Spence grandparents. It was an enjoyable time reconnecting, laughing, crying, and playing together. My parents and aunts and uncles worked diligently to plan the event. We arrived a little later than others because we were just finishing vacation with the Millers in Pinetop!

The first "get together" we attended was dinner at Sadies - one of our favorite Mexican establishments in Albuquerque! Yipee! We are never disappointed there and we feasted on many of grandma and grandpa's favorites - including sopapillas! It was a fun evening of greetings and hugs and preparation for the next day....

Spence celebration (Day 2): Remembering

After our picnic at Battleship Rock the whole bunch of us headed up the road to Jemez Falls to hold a small "celebration of life" for Grandma and Grandpa. My dad led us in a short time of sharing and reflecting on their lives and legacy. "Granny" and "Great Grandpa" as they became known to our kids these last years were married for 73 years. Granny never lived alone - except the last 6 months after Grandpa died. What an amazing blessing to have them in my life for 40 years. I already shared many of those memories when they passed so won't go on about it again - but I love and miss them bunches.

My dad - I was so proud of him - he did a great job "leading" even when it was hard....

Great grands.....Allie and Alex

Grand and great grandchildren....

Debi cracking herself up - well and others too...

Fun in the summer Arizona sun...running a 5K!

It is loads of fun to have kids who are willing to take risks and challenges and are up for trying new things. Merl and Ryan have been running for several months and decided to run a 5K race. Ryan and Madison are both interested in doing a triathlon in the near future but it's too hot right now so this was a compromise. They have only been running a few times a week but Ryan swims almost every day and could easily make the 3 miles so they did it "for fun." I just love what "fun" looks like for different people.

My awesome husband actually thinks exercise is "fun" so he enjoys going out and getting a good workout. The accomplishment of running the 5K is enough for him to be happy! Madison is so very similar. She loves her daily swim workouts and the joy of exercising. OK - so I am different. After being a serious athlete for so long I turned into a couch potato. If there is no competition - you are not getting me out of bed for a run.

On the other hand, fun for me is working toward the goal and the thrill of competing! I love to sweat and hurt for the cause of competition!!! I think I am a good sport - I don't have to win. I just have to do well - and improve in whatever I am working on. I think Ryan seems to be the same! He was thrilled to run with his daddy and enjoy the fun of a race - but there is a natural competitive edge in him. I could see that he was looking around at the other boys his age - and pushing through the race in hopes of a top 3 finish! I was secretly doing the same thing though not verbalizing it because I did not want to push my competitiveness on him.

It was hard for me to watch them go. Thankfully at least I had a job to do - take pictures - or I might have jumped in the race. I would have passed out at the first half mile - but all those old competitive and "love of running" juices just naturally flowed when I saw everyone in their running garb. After the race was over I was fairly sure Ryan had placed in his age category - and boy the memories I have of checking the "results" taped to the wall from my childhood came flooding back as I searched for the times/names. So nostalgic!

Never having run a 5K course before - Ryan stuck with his pop for most of his race - until the end. He finished at 27 minutes - 4th in his division! He was a little disappointed and decided he should have gone on ahead of his dad at mile two - but his chin was up and I was proud of his attitude. We hadn't even gotten to the car for the drive home and he said, "I want to enter every race coming up....that is so fun!" A boy after my own heart! I am so sad that after my last knee surgery the surgeon said running really shouldn't be my "exercise of choice". I am trying to embrace my job as photographer - but I don't know if I can do it. I'm not sure how many races I can "watch".........we will see!

Walking over to the race start

eat mor chikin'.......mooooo!

Bet you didn't know July 8th is "Cow Appreciation Day" at Chick fil' a! I didn't until the kids informed me of such an occasion. They immediately started working on me and asking if we could dress up and go and get free meals. Of course my first reaction was "no way" - since dressing up is not my favorite activity.....and I am usually not much fun! I am trying to work on being more agreeable - so decided maybe we should do it. While thinking it over the kids found out their swim team was having a "team lunch and dress up" there so that sealed it!

The kids completely made their own costumes and Madison and Ryan helped with Allie and Jonathan when needed. All I did in the end was face paint and photography! Believe it or not I even sort of dressed up. (I wasn't going to miss out on a complimentary meal!) I was so proud of how well the kids did with their costumes! Such enthusiasm! So in the end it was a jovial time and there were free meals for all! Did I say I like free of charge?

Simple 4th of July fun.....

This July 4th we didn't have the courage to brave the heat or the crowds this year for a big firework display. However......since we have the great advantage of having dear friends in the neighborhood who would have us......we opted for the backyard pool, store bought fireworks, and 2 minute drive! It is a blessing to share fellowship with family and friends in the comfort of community. Extraordinary friendship is when the kids disappear into the walls of a familiar house and the adults get lost in good conversation and food - all basking in love for one another!

We enjoyed festive food, crafts, and fireworks. Buying one's own fireworks is a fond childhood memory of mine. I remember how fun it was to purchase them, wait in anticipation for the 4th and then set them off ourselves. This is the first year we have bought our own. You would have thought from the kids' excitement that we were at Disneyland watching their fireworks display! It is good for kids to have pleasure in the little things! Thanks for a wonderful night, friends!

Miller's in Pinetop (7) - Thanks

So that is the long story of our Miller vacation in Pinetop! We can put that one in the books and look forward to the next time we spend together. Our family would like to say a big THANK YOU to grandma and grandpa for a wonderful travel time! We have much gratitude for the time and money you've spent in order to facilitate us all being together and the encouragement to build our relationships. It is quality time spent and worth the effort.....cherished memories.....

Miller's in Pinetop (6) - Lavender farm

For Day 6 the activity was arranged by our family. In the end, we were sort of split on what we wanted to do so we decided to divide and conquer. The boys went to a taxidermy shop and the fish hatchery. I have no pictures of this excursion because I tend to be the family photographer and snagged the camera! From what I understand most enjoyed the "dead animals" and learning about the process of preserving them - and some of the group ran into a rattlesnake at the fish hatchery!

The girls headed an hour away into the middle of I don't know where (Conchos, Arizona) to a lavender farm. When I read about the "lavender festival" I pictured a lovely event in the middle of a small town - but this was the craziest thing I've seen.....a little oasis in the middle of a barren desert! It was interesting to hear the story of how the family got there and ended up raising lavender - and are now producing some of the best lavender in the world. You learn something new every day! It was a fun time with the grandma, Aunt Valeta and the girls.....
